A Discussion: Equipment

So all over the world people are creating content or wanting to create content for the internet – for you people. But today I want to start the discussion on whether if equipment is really important or not.
You’ll find that the majority of successful creators will swear that equipment is but a tool, and I agree with that. However they’ll also say that it doesn’t matter what equipment you use, and that’s where my problem with this lies.

See when the current successful content creators began their journey no one was really using expensive equipment for web media – it wasn’t a place for professionally made content, it was a place for web cam videos and cats. That is not what this is anymore. As time has gone by the content has become more complex, more difficult to produce and so the requirement for a team of people or expensive gear has come about. The audience we are intending on capturing are now used to a standard of quality that some people just can’t start off with.

The best way to think about this is to maybe objectively look at the equipment you have right now, and think about what it is you can do to improve the production value of your projects. Maybe add more steps to your editing like colour grading, stabilisation or motion graphics. Think about your lighting and how you can use different light temperatures to gain different effects.

What I’m saying is learn new things – develop new skills to improve the quality of the content you’re making instead of just shelling out cash for things that you may not even need.

Let me know what you think about this topic in the comments, I’m genuinely intrigued by the views on this.

I’m using a pretty basic Sony DSLR for photography and DxO Optics Pro to edit, because I can’t afford Photoshop, but it all works pretty well for an amateur. Every now and again I’ll learn a new setting on my editing software or how to use shutter speed to my advantage and it can completely change photos without spending any money.

I agree that you don’t need the fanciest of equipment, just buy what you can for what you want to do! If you learn how to use it in different ways (ways nobody has before or just ways you’ve never done before) then it can completely change the game. Technology is wonderful.

    • This is exactly the point I was trying to get across!! Thank you so much for this comment man!
